Topic: God is Sovereign (God rules over all)

Text: Isa 45:7-9, Job 42:2, Ps 115:3, 2 Chronicle 20:6

We appreciate God for the privilege given to us to be among those that have sought and found Him. Wise men are still seeking Him, we should not take light of this great Grace and Mercy that we have obtained.

We have been studying different attributes of God within the limits of the knowledge and revelation given to us in His Word. Thus far, we have looked at the Omnipresence of God (Being present everywhere at the same time), hence, nothing happens in His absence, He is present when every decision of kings and rulers are made. God is Omniscient, implying that He knows all things including Science, History, our intents, thoughts etc, hence, nothing catches Him unawares. Satan only thought in his heart, and God cast him down from Heaven (Is 14: 12-15). God is Omnipotent (All Powerful), hence, no power can overcome Him because He has absolute Power. The devil has to move to and fro (1 Pet 5:8, Job 1:7) and his powers are subject to Christ’s (Col 1:16). Furthermore, we have looked at the fact that God is Immutable (Unchanging). Without being immutable, mistakes will be made that have to be rescinded. God is Self Sufficient (He is able to exist on His own). Without being Self-Sufficient, dependence on others can result in comprise and poses a limitation. God is Infinite (Cannot be Measured). Without being Infinite, then we can easily measure God and be absolute in predicting Him.

Having a good understanding these attributes we have studied thus far will help us to appreciate the Topic for today, which is God is Sovereign. To be Sovereign implies being in control/in charge of everything at every time and to achieve this, you must possess all the attributes we have been studying. Putting it succinctly, God is in Charge and Control of everything. Nothing on earth takes Him by Surprise and nothing on earth happens without His permission. “Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? (Lam 3: 27). Paul gave this charge to Timothy in 1 Tim 6: 13 – 16 “I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things.… that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the KING of kings, and LORD of lords, Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” Our God is the only Potentate, which implies He has absolute Power, hence, has Control and is in charge over everything. God saith in Isaiah 45: 5 – 6 “I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. There is no God beside Him, there is none else.

However, as human beings we still sometimes doubt that God is in charge of everything, which includes everything that concerns us and our world. This makes people afraid, compromise and depart from following God. But we (all members of the Chapel by God’s Grace) are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul (Heb 10:39). And so shall we stand all the days of our lives, in Jesus Name. Amen.

We shall examine the following Scriptures and trust God to give us some understanding of His Sovereignty and the implication for us as believers.

God is in Charge of Both Good and Evil

Isa 45:7-9: Makes us to understand that both peace and evil come from God (difficult to swallow) but true as clearly expressed in the passage. Light and darkness comes from Him. He is the One who created us and whatever we are today, we should live in appreciation and adoration of Him. God being Sovereign takes responsibility for everything that happens whether good or evil. In Job 2: 3, we see God taking responsibility for satan’s attack on Job and his family while in Job 2: 6, we see Him placing a boundary on what satan is allowed to do. If He had not allowed satan, he would have had no power to touch Job and his family.

God is the One that created us and appointed our times and boundaries of our habitations (Acts 17: 26), thus, we should never strive with Him, irrespective of the challenges we might be facing today. Having the knowledge that His plans for us are of good and not of evil, and will eventually bring us to an expected end. The various Sermons, Sunday School and Bible study lessons we have been having, if applied correctly will help us see the goodness of God in all things around us and how we can press on to the expected end, which is the goodness kept in store. Learning from Joseph as a classic example..For He maketh all things work together for the good of those who love Him and are called in accordance to His purpose (Rom 8: 28).

God Does Whatever Pleases Him:

Psa 115:3 But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

He has Mercy on whom He will have mercy on (Exo 33:19 & Rom 9:15).

He puts one down and lifts another at His will (Psalm 75: 7 & Dan 2: 21). Classic example is the case of Mordecai and Haman the hater of the Jews, "And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?" (Dan 4:35).

Isaiah 53: 9(b) – 10(a) speaking concerning The LORD Jesus “..because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief:” With the understanding we have today, we know that it was for the good of mankind in fulfilment of His purpose of Salvation.

With this understanding, putting other knowledge we have of God’s plan and purpose as well as His Nature, we should be able to wade through life, knowing for sure that as long as we are in God’s will, whatever situation we find ourselves in, will surely end up well. God can do whatever please Him with us. We are His servants and here to do His bidding and He will bring us eventually to His expected end for our lives.

All Power and Might are in God’s Hand

2 Chron 20: 6, Mat 28: 18, Eph 1: 19 – 21. These and several other passages ascribes absolute Power to God and we shall do well to be in His will, for He alone and deliver us and none can deliver from His hand (Isa 43: 13). With this, we know that we are protected and secured regardless of the situation of the land. In the days of Noah, there was great violence (Gen 6: 11) in the earth but God kept Noah all through. Be building an Ark for God with your family, for God will surely keep and preserve you through the Pandemic, kidnapping, Boko haram etc.

God is in Charge of Life and Death

No one can die except God says so.

Mat 10: 28 – 31. Every hair on our head is numbered and none can fall except The LORD allows it. We can rest in this assurance that God will keep us until the fullness of our days, if we continue in His will and purpose for our lives.

God gives us insight why the righteous die when least expected, in our thinking as men. Isa 57: 1, 1 Kgs 14: 10 -13. God is never caught unawares when a Saint dies and He is able to preserve us from the Sword. Psalm 144: 10. He preserved David in every battle he fought throughout his life.

God can Keep you from Sinning

Gen 20: 6. God kept Abimelech from sinning when he took Sarai, Abraham’s wife and God can keep us to live holy and righteous lives also on this side of eternity. There are several other Scriptures that gives us insight into God’s ability to keep us in living holy and righteous lives as Christians. His Word will set us free and Keep us from Sinning against Him.

There is so much to learn about the Sovereignty of God that we can never fully understand on this side of eternity. But we shall do well to purge ourselves off all unrighteousness and present ourselves vessels unto honour before God (2 Tim 2: 21 – 22), and we shall be among those who will enjoy the faithfulness of God being the Sovereign of His Earth.

We can never understand everything on this side of Eternity, but we understand that God is Faithful and will keep us in His Faithfulness.

  1. Let all that I am learning about God’s attributes strengthen my faith and make walk closer with Him.
  2. Give me an understanding of your purpose for my life and make it clearer daily, and also teach me to walk in it.
  3. Let the perfection of your Grace work in me to make me live a life that pleases You always, with every member of my family.
  4. Preserve us in the midst of this COVID 19 Pandemic and chaos around the world. Shield us and our loved ones from the hands of kidnappers and criminal elements in the nation.
  5. Preserve our going out and coming all the days of our lives.
  6. Help us to see your will and purpose in our present circumstances and help us to come out triumphant in it all.
  7. Order our steps into Your Favour and cause us to find Favour with You and men.

May The LORD keep us to fullness of our days, in Jesus Name. Amen. Praise the LORD.
